FRANCE: LIGUE 1 – ROUND 6
Date: 24 September 2023, Sunday
Kick-off at 14:00 EAT
Venue: Stade Saint-Symphorien (Metz)
Following two consecutive Ligue 1 defeats, the predominant feeling within the Montpellier camp must have been one of relief when they secured a point on the road against Strasbourg last week, resulting in a 2-2 draw.
However, the manager, Michel Der Zakarian, was left with a bitter taste in his mouth.
Not only did his team relinquish a 2-0 lead at half-time, but they were also denied a potential winning goal deep into stoppage time due to a controversial VAR decision.
Der Zakarian strongly criticized this decision, describing it as “incomprehensible and unfair” in the post-match comments.
Nevertheless, he can’t afford to dwell on it for long as he works on devising a game plan to help Montpellier.
The team is currently four points behind their position at the same stage last season and faces the prospect of going winless in four consecutive Ligue 1 matches for the first time since they endured a seven-match winless streak in November last year.
Der Zakarian will draw inspiration from the fact that Montpellier has won two of their last three home encounters against Rennes, including a victory in April when they played with only ten men from the 53rd minute.
This could provide a much-needed confidence boost.
Speaking of boosts, Rennes found one of their own in midweek European action with a 3-0 triumph over Maccabi Haifa, putting an end to a lackluster run of four consecutive Ligue 1 draws.
Their previous weekend’s 2-2 draw at home against Lille might not have been much of a surprise, considering that not a single home victory was recorded across the entire division in Ligue 1’s fifth round of fixtures.
Manager Bruno Génésio’s task now is to capitalize on the success from midweek and transform more of those draws into wins. In this upcoming match, he aims to do so against a familiar opponent. Génésio has faced Montpellier 14 times in his managerial career, second only to PSG with 15 encounters. Notably, he has never beaten a team more times than he has defeated La Paillade, with nine wins, three draws, and two losses against them.
